His mother’s stories about her childhood were still fresh in his mind, and he could also remember his last visit to Woodchester with her, when she was in good health. From the drive, a footpath ran northwards down a slope, and then up again to the new church, where Alfred could see the memorial windows to his grandfather and uncle Basil. Beyond the church, and across the main street, he could examine the Elizabethan rectory where his mother had lived; or he could walk down the lane which led to the remains of the church where his parents had been married, and to the churchyard where a previous rector of Woodchester had discovered a remarkable Roman mosaic pavement.
